Already couple years we have adopted synergy as a standard tool across the customer site. Beginning was initially challenging and had huge amount of work however now it is accepted as a highly capabale robust tool.
Combined with the tight integration with Rational Change, Synergy gives you serious and robust tool to configuration management needs.

Key product in our tools suite
Date: November 14, 2009
Over the past 5 years we have adopted synergy as a standard tool across the company. Uptake was initially slow however now it is now accepted as a highly capabale robust tool. We currently use over 300 licenses across the company and we are looking at expanding it.
The featues and UI which have been introduced in the latest versions address many of the issues which users complained about when we first started.
Synergy's future direction of using coporate sign on is a step in the right direction however they need to address some key issues before this aspect of it can be used in anger. (This should be fixed in the next release hopefully)
Like with all complex products training is a key aspect to getting the most out of it. Synergy works in a different way to which people working with other tools in this area think and it can be a challenge to get people to change their thinking. However once they do it is well worth it.
Combined with the tight integration with Rational Change, Synergy gives you 99% of what you need out of the box to do the simlest development to the most complex development.
We would recommend Synergy for any organisatino which is serious about configuration management.

An Excellent tool for a multi-* environment.
Date: November 13, 2009
An Excellent tool for multi-platform, multi-developer, multi-site development.
We've been using Rational Synergy for about 10 years and it would be hard to imagine using anything else. When dealing with multiple developers spread across multiple sites, it's nice to have a tool that takes out all of the guesswork. The developers only need to worry about writing their code. The tool will take care of keeping the most recent files in their project.
For the newer developer, having Synergy automatically pull in the updates from the other developers tends to frighten them. But once they understand that it is easier to merge their code sooner (consolidating small changes) instead of waiting to consolidate one much larger bundle of changes, they appreciate the functionality.
For smaller software projects, Synergy may be a bit overkill. But it's much better to have all of the code in one repository up front than to have to scramble to try to find and import the smaller projects when they are needed in a larger project late in the game.
When it comes to adding a new site, simply install out of the box, turn on DCM and the tool is up and running. Choose the projects that you want to DCM and push them across, then use queries to choose what else should dcm across and how often.
For new installs that require customization, I would definitely recommend bringing in Professional Services for help. Although they do seem a bit pricey, they have demonstrated many times that some customizations that would take me a couple of days to implement, they can implement in hours!!!
